Windows 7 MOE Migration Completed at NOPSA

Early in 2010, the National Offshore Petroleum Safety Authority (NOPSA) was in the process of procuring a number of new laptops. At the time, ZettaServe identified significant effort would be required to migrate the existing Windows XP SOE Ghost image to the new hardware.

ZettaServe designed, built and tested an optimised Windows 7 MOE and coordinated the deployment of the MOE to the entire NOPSA fleet. ZettaServe also packaged applications required in the NOPSA environment ensuring compatibility and reliability of applications in the new environment.

ZettaServe provided NOPSA with:

  • A suitable MOE design based on careful and detailed analysis of NOPSA’s requirements
  • The creation, testing and piloting of the new MOE including application packages, Windows 7 and SCCM 2007 deployment infrastructure
  • Hardware Compatibility Analysis
  • Software Compatibility Analysis
  • Project Management of the MOE Migration using a dedicated PRINCE2 certified Project Manager
  • All required documentation including:
    • MOE Specifications
    • MOE Migration Project Plan
    • MOE Deployment, Maintenance and Administration Procedures
    • Microsoft Office 2003 SP3 Design and Specifications
  • Application packaging for all applications required in the NOPSA environment
  • Deployment of the MOE to the pilot group
  • Full deployment of the MOE to all NOPSA machines

ZettaServe used its standardised MOE migration methodology through the plan, build, pilot and deployment phases to implement the new MOE at NOPSA. The components of the MOE were assembled using the ZettaServe Modular Managed Operating Environment (Modular MOE) Framework. The Modular MOE Framework is based around industry best practises and standards. Components of the new MOE will be re-usable by NOPSA should they change their systems (e.g. SCCM, ZENworks, Altiris or HP Openview etc) in future. The Modular MOE structure also allows for the inclusion of new models of machine, new application packages and new operating systems quickly and simply. It also enables effective management of security patching and antivirus updates. The total benefits received by NOPSA are:

  • Modularity
  • Automation and Standardisation
  • Centralised Configuration Management and Control
  • Increased End-User Productivity
  • Enhanced Security
  • Asset Management and Licensing Compliance
  • Desktop Optimisation
